About the River Plym

The River PlymAll of our rooms are named after Dartmoor rivers.

The river Plym rises from a point known as Plym Head, some 1500ft above sea level and in a very isolated part of Dartmoor to the east of Burrator Reservoir.

The early stretches of the Plym pass through upland marshy areas, before flowing approximately southwest towards the city of Plymouth (to which the River Plym gives its name).

The last few miles of the river, through the lower Plym Valley, include easily accessible riverside walks and cycle trails.  At Marsh Mills, on the outskirts of Plymouth, the volunteer-run Plym Valley Railway offers steam and diesel-hauled train rides along a short section of the rebuilt line.

After 19 miles from its source on Dartmoor, the Plym finally enters the magnificant natural harbour of Plymouth Sound.
