Dartmoor is known for its beautiful landscapes and wildlife, but the moor is also home to some wonderful local art galleries. Between professional sculpture and local craft exhibits, Dartmoor’s galleries offer a fantastic range of art to explore.

Green Hill Arts, Moretonhampstead

One of Devon’s best art galleries, Green Hill Arts, features artwork from some of the Southwest’s best and most respected artists. The light and airy contemporary exhibition space allows for a flexible space to feature all kinds of art.

A new exhibition is held around every six weeks, allowing for a wide range of different artists’ works to be displayed. This gallery also features a shop in which artists can display and sell their works in various mediums.

Salar Gallery, Hatherleigh

Located in the town of Hatherleigh, Salar Gallery features paintings and craftwork from a multitude of local artists, many of which focus on the landscape, animals, and heritage of the area.

The gallery also often features temporary exhibitions of the work of specific local artists. The craftwork on display here comes in so many mediums, from ceramics to textiles to wood carvings. This gallery also functions as a shop, selling local art and craftwork.

MAKE Southwest, Bovey Tracey

This crafts centre in Bovey Tracey is an exhibition space for contemporary craft and design, as well as a charity supporting craft education. MAKE offers an ever-changing and varied range of exhibitions, as well as events and workshops on nearly any craft you can think of.

Almost everything sold is made by local artists, while the exhibitions display a wide range featuring the best craftwork from around the country.

Elford Fine Art Gallery, Tavistock

Offering a unique collection of period and contemporary paintings, Elford Fine Art Gallery features paintings which mostly focus on landscapes, coastal images, and animal subjects. Their exhibits include Devon and Dartmoor, The Art of Cornwall, Marine and Coastal, Impressionist, and Contemporary. The gallery is located in the market town of Tavistock, and all paintings are available to purchase.

 

Stone Lane Gardens, Chagford

While not primarily an art gallery, this 5-acre woodland garden makes for a whimsical and creative alternative art gallery during its annual sculpture exhibition. During the summer months, usually from June until late August/early September, the gardens are home to the artwork of many different local artists, in a variety of media.

While not an art gallery year-round, Stone Lane Gardens offers a unique and immersive sculpture experience, so if you are visiting Dartmoor during the summer, this is an excellent art viewing opportunity to indulge in!
