Appledore Book Festival

During late September, the idyllic maritime village of Appledore on the North Devon coast becomes host to one of the UK’s most popular literary festivals.

Many of the UK’s most popular writers descend on this picturesque town for ten days of conversations, workshops and celebrations of the local area. If you’re a bookworm, this is a wonderful excuse to visit one of North Devon’s hidden gems.

Devon County Show, Exeter

There are many celebrations of Devon’s country living across the country, but none are as big as the Devon County Show. Three days in a large field outside Exeter devoted to everything farm and countryside life.

Visiting the Devon County Show is a wonderful way to get a taste of the best of Devon. There are more animals than you could count and lots of farming machinery that will keep children entertained. Food villages and a mix of performances throughout the Show make this a popular event for the whole family.

Salcombe Crabfest

Many towns across Devon have their own unique festivals, but one of the most eye-catching and popular is the Salcombe Crab Festival, aka. Crabfest!

Born as a celebration of the tasty brown crabs caught from Salcombe’s harbour, it has now become a much wider celebration of great local food and drink, often visited by popular TV chefs.

With live music, activities for kids and plenty of delicious food to taste, this is a wonderful way to experience Devon’s community spirit.

Agatha Christie Festival, Torquay

Devon has inspired a lot of writers and books, but perhaps none are as world-famous as Agatha Christie. Born in Torquay and spending much of her life on Devon’s English Riviera, her legacy is celebrated annually in the town of her birth.

The Agatha Christie Festival sees Torquay play host to a range of talks, walks, workshops, performances and more, all inspired by the legendary murder mystery writer. Whether you’re a fan of Christie’s books or murder mysteries in general, there will be something quirky going on for you to discover.

Sidmouth Folk Festival

Folk music is an important part of Devonshire culture, and Sidmouth Folk Festival is one of its biggest celebrations.

A festival dating back to 1955, Sidmouth Folk Festival is a wonderful blend of contemporary music and stories with generations-old traditions. There’s something for everyone in this week-long event, from stand-up and sit-down concerts to dance halls and events for kids.

If you enjoy folk music or simply want to connect with the magic and community imbued in traditional folk song and dance, this is a wonderful time to visit.

Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival

Dates: 23-27 September and 13-14 March 2026

Another of Devon’s biggest literary festivals, this event sees many of the UK’s best writers descend on beautiful Budleigh Salterton in East Devon. While the festival puts together a weekend event during March, the main entertainment occurs during September.

With 15 venues throughout the town hosting talks, signings, book swaps and more, Budleigh becomes a hive of creativity during the festival. With the beach always close by, it’s a wonderful place to be for any book lover.

Mid Devon Show

While only a one-day event, this bustling country show is a must-visit if you’re lucky to be in the Tiverton area.

Set in the beautiful National Trust property Knightshayes Court, the Mid Devon Show is a celebration of so many different parts of Devonshire life. Local food and drink are the stars of the show, but livestock, live music and local craftspeople all help keep large crowds entertained all day.

Whether you want to try some local products or are simply looking for a fun day out, this is a great Show to visit.
