With beautiful open lands and undulating moors, it’s no surprise that Dartmoor has been attracting golf fans for generations. While much of Dartmoor is protected land, many beautiful golf courses live on its edges, allowing you to sample the challenging landscape with some of the UK’s most stunning backdrops.
Our hotel in Chagford, Devon, is ideally located within easy reach of Dartmoor and some of the golf courses mentioned here. Wherever you are in Dartmoor, though, you’ll likely be close to one of these stunning golf courses.
Okehampton Golf Club’s history goes back 100 years, and with the stunning hills of Dartmoor in the background, this course makes for an incredible experience.
The 18-hole course is built into an ancient deer park and is surrounded by lush Oak trees, and deer can still be seen grazing at dawn. The course is known for excellent, fast-paced greens, offering something for both amateurs and professionals.
The course is open 7 days a week, with tee times from morning until evening. The clubhouse also does a carvery on Sundays.
Mill End Hotel has a partnership with Okehampton Golf Club, offering our guests reduced green fees. Speak to our team for more information.
Arguably Dartmoor’s most renowned course, Bovey Castle offers challenging but enjoyable 18-hole championship golf.
The course is built on the expansive grounds of the manor house after which it is named and was designed by J F Abercromby – one of England’s most renowned course designers – in 1926.
Bovey Castle offers a wide range of facilities besides their idyllic course, from driving ranges and putting greens to golf lessons and a shop. It’s also just a 15-minute drive from our Mill End Hotel.
Built on beautiful moorlands on the western outskirts of Dartmoor, Tavistock Golf Club captures the rugged beauty of the region with its challenging links-like course.
Unlike some other courses, Tavistock is built on wide-open, public-access land, with many walking paths along the course. This makes the course great for high handicap players as rounds are easily saved, while the natural rugged landscape provides plenty of challenges for more experienced golfers.
An English Golf Championship venue, Stover Golf Club offers terrific views across the old Stover Estate, located just to the east of Dartmoor. A wonderful collection of historic holes and new designs, it’s a well-balanced course that offers something for golfers of all abilities.
The course comes with a lot of variety, from the long-ranging front nine to narrow fairways and greens on the back 9, with bunkers and water features abound to keep you on your toes. The bar and lounge overlook the first hole, perfect for refreshments before or after.
Yelverton Golf Club is one of Devon’s most-loved golf courses with a history dating back over 100 years. Designed by popular architect Herbert Fowler, this heathland golf course makes good use of the rugged region and its mining history to produce a challenging and enjoyable 18 holes.
The course has played host to various amateur championships over the years and is kept in great condition. A classic clubhouse offering food and drinks can top off a great afternoon.
Located on the outskirts of Plymouth just south of Dartmoor, Boringdon is an expansive golf club that’s great for people looking to while away an afternoon in South Devon. Boringdon offers two courses – the 18-hole Saltram Course and a smaller 9-hole Estuary Course designed with beginners in mind.
Boringdon also has a large, welcoming clubhouse serving food and drink all day, as well as driving ranges and a golf shop. It’s everything you need for a round of golf while on holiday.
No matter where in Dartmoor you’re planning to spend a day, chances are there’s a great golf course nearby. If you’re looking for a place to stay, our Mill End Hotel is situated in the heart of Dartmoor, making it easy to reach many of the courses listed here.
